Voices From the Past: A Special Afternoon at Hemlock Cemetery!

Did you know that before towns had public parks, cemeteries were community gathering spaces? In the 19th century, families regularly brought picnic baskets to burial grounds to share a meal, enjoy nature, and keep the memory of their departed loved ones alive as part of daily life. We are emulating this historic tradition to help save our town's history!  Join the Independence Historical Society for a special community gathering as we honor the pioneers who built our town.

Time: 1:00 PM-4:00 PM
Location: Hemlock Cemetery-park in the Technology Center/Hemlock Trail lot

What to Expect:

• Historic Hospitality with a Modern Twist: Purchase pizza and pop on site.

• Preserving the Legacy: Learn about our ongoing restoration program and how your donations will directly fund the repair, resetting and cleaning of broken gravestones and the revitalization of these neglected grounds.

• Honor the Past: Walk the grounds and discover the incredible stories of the early residents resting here, told by costumed actors.

This event is entirely dedicated to honoring those who came before us. Time and neglect have taken a toll on this sacred space. By coming together, as our ancestors did, we can raise the vital funds needed to restore dignity to these headstones and ensure our pioneers and their stories are never forgotten.

Admission: $5 per person donation at the gate; $5.50 online
