ANNOUNCEMENT: HEMLOCK CEMETERY RESTORATION IS UNDERWAY!
The Independence Historical Society is pleased to announce that the first phase of monument restoration at Hemlock Cemetery will start on Saturday, June 27th and continue throughout 2026, as weather permits. Workers will be present alone, and for insurance and safety reasons, cannot be disturbed. However, passers-by are welcome to observe the process.
If you have ancestors buried at Hemlock, please email us to consider “adopting a grave” to support our restoration efforts and honor your family members. We welcome questions and concerns from those related to anyone buried at Hemlock. Check the list of surnames below.
We look forward to restoring this important Independence landmark and hope it becomes a destination for learning about the early pioneers of Independence.
We are planning a fun informational event at Hemlock Cemetery in October. Please follow us on Facebook or our website and check for updates in the Community Spotlight.

MURALS ACROSS OHIO
As Ohio gears up for the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026, the America 250-Ohio Commission is featuring public art through the MURALS ACROSS OHIO program. One of the featured works is the mural designed and painted in 2018 by the late Oscar Velasquez, depicting the history of Independence.
VISIT the INDEPENDENCE HISTORY MURAL and WINDOW DISPLAYS
The Historical Society invites you to explore the mural at 6576 Brecksville Rd. while learning about its landmarks from the new front window banners. Then check out the second window, showcasing “Growth and Industry in Independence Township,” with items from the 1800s to early 1900s that highlight local enterprises like farming, mining, blacksmithing and main street businesses.
